Comments on Homeschoolers from the Director of Admissions

Homeschoolers and Franciscan University of Steubenville–it’s a natural fit. Since 1988, students who have thrived in a home school environment have made a smooth transition to a successful college life at Franciscan University. That’s because the same commitment to faith and reason that draws families to home school their children forms the foundation of our approach to education.

Our academically challenging and passionately Catholic educational experience is designed to help students discover the Way through a Catholic university that imparts moral, spiritual, and intellectual virtues and opens paths to a vocation and a career; seek the Truth through a demanding academic curriculum and pre-professional experience, a passion for new knowledge, and teaching grounded in objective truth; and experience the Life within a Franciscan campus that celebrates the lordship of Jesus Christ, life in the Holy Spirit, and love for the Catholic Church.

About 17% of our incoming freshmen are home schooled. Their average GPA, ACT, and SAT scores are slightly above our non-home schooled students. Our homeschoolers come academically ready to take on the rigors of college classes. They are disciplined in study habits that some faculty have said make it easy to identify them in the classroom or lab settings. Our 15:1 student-to-faculty ratio provides ample opportunity for close interaction with professors. This is something homeschoolers are used to and take advantage of here as well.

One of our students described her previous education as taking place in a solid “family environment”. When she came to Franciscan, she found that same family environment: supportive faculty, terrific friends, and a strong faith community. It felt like home.
